Powerboat Courses & Training
POWERBOAT LEVEL 1
- A one day introduction to powerboat handling. An ideal starter
for juniors and candidates with no previous experience. A
short theory session followed by practical on the water boat
handling.
POWERBOAT LEVEL 2
- this two day course is run either one to one or with a maximum
of three students to one instructor. The course provides the
knowledge and skills to use a powerboat safely in coastal
waters. Classroom theory is combined with coastal water tuition
in the Lymington River and the Western Solent.
The ICC (International Certificate of Competence) can be linked
to this course on successful completion of the Level 2.
No previous experience necessary.
POWERBOAT INTERMEDIATE COURSE
- this two day practical and theory course is the stepping
stone to becoming an Advanced Powerboater. Candidates should
have Level 2 certification and a basic knowledge of navigation.
The course covers practical use of traditional and electronic
navigation and teaches pilotage and passage planning on coastal
waters in daylight hours. It is recommended (but is not a
requirement) that candidates hold a current First Aid Certificate
and a VHF operators licence.
ADVANCED POWERBOAT
COURSE - This course is run over two full days and
one night time exercise. For candidates wishing to take their
training up to a higher level this course is professionally
recognised and can be commercially endorsed after taking a
further examination.
A sound knowledge of navigation is a course requisite and
candidates must hold a current First Aid Certificate and a
VHF operators licence.
RYA POWERBOAT LEVEL
2 [DIRECT ASSESSMENT] - Candidates who feel they have
the skills and knowledge to safely handle a powerboat on coastal
waters can demonstrate this to an instructor by way of a half
day practical assessment. The ICC can be linked to this pending
a successful pass.
POWERBOAT INSTRUCTORS
COURSE [PBI] - This is a three day course for those
who wish to develop their marine career by becoming a powerboat
instructor. The course includes principles of practical and
theory instruction, lesson planning, teaching styles, student
assessment, boat and equipment preparation, and a range of
teaching methods. Candidates should have a sound level of
powerboating experience acquired over several years on the
water, and must hold the Level 2 certificate as a minimum,
together with a VHF operators licence and a current First
Aid Certificate. Successful candidates become qualified to
teach Levels 1 & 2 of the RYA Powerboat syllabus at a
recognised RYA training centre.
ADVANCED POWERBOAT
INSTRUCTORS COURSE [APBI] - This is a two day course
which develops and extends the knowledge gained by PBIs to
allow them to teach the RYA Powerboat syllabus to Advanced
level. Candidates should be both a PBI and Advanced Powerboat
certificate holder, and should have taught regularly for a
school for some time.
INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE
OF COMPETENCE [ICC] - The ICC is designed to allow
UK citizens / residents to visit European waters in UK flagged
vessels. The ICC for powerboats up to 10 metres can be obtained
either by passing an ICC assessment (practical & theory),
or by obtaining the RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate. On
presentation of either pass certificate to the RYA they will
then issue the ICC (subject to a fee).
For more information about the practical applications and
limitations of the ICC, and for the RYA ICC application form,

website which will open in a new window

CEVNI TESTS
- CEVNI stands for Code Européen des Voies de Navigation
Intérieure. It is the code governing navigation on
the interconnected European inland waterways and is the basis
of the various countries' own regulations. If you require
an ICC valid for use on inland waters, you must also learn
the CEVNI code and sit the CEVNI test which is a short multiple
choice paper. The RYA website has more information here
http://www.rya.org.uk/KnowledgeBase/boatingabroad/icc/cevni.htm
SHORT RANGE CERTIFICATE
[VHF-DSC RADIO] - This is a one day theory course and
assessment for the Short Range Certificate giving the successful
candidate a Certificate of Competence and Licence to Operate
marine band VHF radio equipment with or without Digital Selective
Calling (DSC). It is an important course for any boat user
because this certificate must be held in order to be able
to use a VHF radio legally. For anyone who is or who plans
to become a regular boat user this really is a must have because
a VHF radio is a fundamental piece of safety equipment.
BESPOKE DAYS
- Amongst our most popular options; spend anything from a
couple of hours to a full day with an instructor on a one-to-one
basis. Bespoke sessions can be used to do anything from basic
boat handling, to Solent pilotage, to running long passages
involving complex navigation and pilotage at speed in daylight
or at night. This time can even be used to take the family
out for a day on the water with the security and comfort of
having an instructor on board, and it is a great way of building
up sea miles and boat time.
THEORY BRUSH UP
- We can spend an hour, or a day or two, going over anything
from basic theory and navigation right up to astro-navigation,
but please note we do not run RYA Day Skipper or Yachtmaster
theory courses.
OWN BOAT TUITION
- We can run any of the above practical courses for you on
your own powerboat - this could not only save you money on
the cost of any course but also give you practical experience
handling your own vessel whilst working towards an RYA qualification.
WE ARE ALSO ABLE TO ARRANGE
- RYA Day Skipper Theory/Practical Courses
- First Aid Courses
- Rough water Handling
- Rib charter
